MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Runners of all ages took to the streets Saturday morning for the

Stepping Into Spring 5K and Kids Fun Run, hosted by the Get Moving! organization, led by

founder Elizabeth Oppe.

The race began just outside Milan Puskar Stadium at 9 a.m. and finished on the stadium’s

football field, giving participants a unique end to the course. The route wound through

Morgantown and included the well-known Law School Hill, a challenging stretch that tested

runners along the way.

A total of 40 runners participated in the 5K, with seven children taking part in the Kids Fun Run.

Proceeds from the 5K will benefit the Get Moving! organization. Entry to the Kids Fun Run was

free with the donation of a stuffed animal, which will be donated to the West Virginia

University’s Golisano Children’s Hospital.

Despite cold temperatures, the rain held off, allowing for a smooth and successful event.

In the 5K race, Josh Shrewsberry finished in first place with a time of 17 minutes, 32.42 seconds.

Gavin Whorton placed second at 17:36.97, followed by Christopher Pirie in third at 18:28.81.

The event also featured special appearances from WVU Mountaineer Cade Kincaid, West

Virginia Black Bears mascot Cooper and the Chick-fil-A Cow, accompanied by handler Alyssa,

created a fun and energetic atmosphere throughout the morning.

Behind the scenes, the event came together with the help of several key contributors. Aaron

DePew, of the Miles of Smiles organization, handled race bibs, timing, and finish line operations,

while Jamie Summerlin played a major role in race-day coordination and setup. Organizers also

credited the volunteers who stepped in wherever needed to keep the event running smoothly.

Most importantly, organizers thanked the runners, families, and community members who

showed up despite the cold.

“Seeing the community come together like this is exactly why we do what we do,” Oppe said.

Planning is already underway for next year’s Stepping Into Spring 5K and Kids Fun Run, with

more details expected to be announced at a later date.
